The Q&A Archives: Dividing perennials

Question: Now that summer is almost over, when should I divide my iris'? How about sedum? Do I dig up the entire plant and then cut apart and replant?

Answer: Yes on both counts. Iris can be dug and divided now. You can break the ends off the rhizomes and replant them, discarding the non-productive center. Sedums can be dug and divided, too. As long as each division has both roots and leaves, they will grow into new plants. Good luck with your garden.
