i would like to plant a tree on the side of my house. i have underground wires about 6-8 ft nearby. what trees roots go down and not out?

Yews are deep rooted so that might be a good choice for the area. With other trees you can encourage deep rooting by watering deeply so the roots go down rather than out. In general, roots extend out at least as far as the longest branches of a tree so choosing a tall narrow tree will help in keeping the roots under control. Good luck with your new tree.
