The Q&A Archives: Pruning fruit trees

Question: I recently moved in a home with a well established apple and pear tree. They bear fruit, not too bad looking. The pear tree looks ok but the apple tree has several dead-looking branches. These trees don't look well cared for. What can be done for these trees short of getting rid of them?
