The Q&A Archives: prune

Question: I would like to prune my crape myrtle so it grow upward. Right now it is kine of spread out. I don't see any buds on it.

Answer: You can shorten the branches on your crape myrtle so it is not quite so wide. It might be a little late in the season to prune it, though. Pruning encourages new growth and any new growth your crape myrtle develops now won't have time to harden off before cold weather arrives. I'd wait until spring to prune it back.
