The Q&A Archives: Alstromeria Basics for NE

Question: I seek information on Alstromeria. Is it an annual or perennial? Will it grow in my area of the country (Nebraska)? Where can I purchase seeds and or plants? I can't find either in my town. Any help is appreciated. Trees Barner York, NE

Answer: Alstromeria, native to South America, is an herbaceous, summer-flowering perennial. Some varieties are hardy up to zone 7 or so; a few varieties may survive in zone 6 with adequate winter protection. You can always give them a try, but you might want to choose plants more adapted to your climate. Plants are available from White Flower Farm in Litchfield, CT Tel: 1-800-503-9624.
