The Q&A Archives: Butternut Squash

Question: When is it ripe enough to pick?

Answer: You can harvest your winter squash when they are the right size and color. When you can no longer pierce the skin with your fingernail, they are ready to pick. Cut them off the vine leaving a stub several inches long as a "handle". They will store better this way.
