This is the first season for my fig tree, and I'm wondering how to tell when the figs are ripe.

That's exciting to have your figs ripening! They are ready to pick when the stalk weakens and the fruit hangs down from the tree. Other signs are cracking skin and a drop of nectar at the base.

Incidentally, a curious quirk about figs is that they will grow too vigorously and produce few fruits if their roots grow unrestricted. For this reason, the trees are often grown in pots immersed in the ground. A 15-inch pot is a good size. Good luck with your tree.
