this is my first year gardening. I have planted lillies, asters, mums, moonbeam bellflower, iris and crocus. I live in mi and need to know when to mulch and how thick? I have a lot of sand. |
Mulch will help protect the roots of your plants and will help keep the soil from heaving in the freeze/thaw cycle of winter and spring. Wait until frost nips the tops of your plants. This will signal the plants to go into dormancy. Cut the foliage down to ground level and then cover over the bed with 3-4 inches of organic mulch. You can use compost, shredded leaves, pine needles or even straw. Good luck with your garden! |
