The Q&A Archives: hygangeas

Question: I live in zone 8, when do I prune and how do I prune my hydrangeas

Answer: Your hydrangeas are probably macrophylla (big leaf). If so, they develop flowers on new growth that develops on old growth. You can prune your hydrangeas down this fall. I prune mine down to 18-24" above ground level. New growth that develops from this old growth should flower for you this spring.
