I live in zone 8, when do I prune and how do I prune my hydrangeas

Your hydrangeas are probably macrophylla (big leaf). If so, they develop flowers on new growth that develops on old growth. You can prune your hydrangeas down this fall. I prune mine down to 18-24" above ground level. New growth that develops from this old growth should flower for you this spring.
