My neighbor recently received mulch. It is from trees that have been run through a chipper. The pieces are big and are from a variety of trees. Would this make good mulch to mix in with dirt for a garden?

You can use the chipped material as a mulch on top of the soil, or you can mix it into the soil to use as an amendment. Fresh wood can rob the soil of nitrogen so before mixing it into the soil you'll want to broadcast some all purpose fertilizer over the area and then add a 2-3 inch layer of wood chips. I just use a cupful of fertilizer and sprinkle it lightly over a 100 square foot area. You can adjust the amounts depending upon the size of your garden area.
