my tangerine tree had a large trunk branch that grew up the middle,taller than the tree.The fruit was small, round, hard yellow&sour. It had this fruit out of season(July).

Tangerine trees are grafted onto a citrus rootstock. I think the branch is a sucker from the rootstock. I would trace the branch down to the very base and prune it off the tree. Because suckers from the rootstock are so vigorous they can overtake the grafted part of the tree if they are not removed as soon as you recognize them.
