| I have planted some 5-6' potocarpus along my house as a hedge line, a year ago. I live in the San Francisco area so the soil is primarly sandy. My question is half the trees are real sparce/thin and now the leaves ae tuning brown and wilty> I have increased the water but its not helping..Too much water? not enough? PLease help! |
| The good news about sandy soil is that it drains really fast. The bad news is that it does not hold moisture and nutrients so you'll need to water and feed more frequently. Sparce and thin growth can indicate lack of sufficient sunlight, or the need for nutrients. Try feeding your podocarpus with a liquid ferilizer (for fast reaction). Miracle Gro or Miracid will help supply the nutrients they need. In the spring you can prune your plants back to encourage healthy new growth and they should become thicker and denser. As for watering, water as usual and then wait 3-4 days and dig down into the soil. If it is still moist you won't have to water for a few days; if it is dry, it's time to water.
