The Q&A Archives: Rhubarb Pest

Question: I just planted a Rhubarb plant this spring and any new growth coming up now the back side of the leaves is covered with little black eggs that look like black pepper. I do not know what I should do for it.

Answer: Rhubarb is usually more or less pest free, and based on your description I'm not sure exactly what those are. You might try rubbing them off by hand, or washing them off with a firm spray from the garden hose. If that doesn't work, you might wish to take a sample to your County Extension for a positive identification and suggested control, if any. Their telephone number in St. Lawrence County is 379-9192.
