The Q&A Archives: holly cross polination

Question: Can you cross polinate a Chinese Boy Holly with a Blue Girl Holly that we sell here at HD

Answer: China Boy is a good pollinator for China Girl and Blue Boy is a good pollinator for Blue Girl. While both China Boy and Blue Girl are Illex x meserveae, they are different hybrids and will flower at different times. So, they may cross pollinate, but they may not. That's why plant breeders make pairs with similar names so you know which the best choice for a male and a compatible female. I'd find the proper mate for the China Boy or the Blue Girl just to make sure the females will develop berries.
