My husband and I did the DIY tree ring project around our maple tree. People keep asking me dry rot and if it will kill the tree. Is that something I should worry about? It never occured to me.

I'm not sure which project you did but the general rule of thumb is to avoid piling soil up around the base of a tree. Soil can retain water which can rot the bark. Try not to keep the soil near the tree too wet and the tree bark should be fine.
