What is the best method to acquire seeds for future use from sunflower plants? |
Harvest your sunflower seeds as soon as they start to turn brown, or the backs of the seed heads turn yellow. The heads usually droop at this time. Cut them along with 2' of stem and hang them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place, such as a garage or attic, until fully dry. You can rub two heads together to brush the seeds out, or use your hand or a stiff brush. Spread the seeds out to dry completely (test by crunching one or two between your teeth), then store in plastic bags for birdfood, or in air tight containers if you plan to consume them, or save them for planting. |
