Curcuma is also known as the Hidden Lily. It's a native of the tropical regions of Asia, propagated by division of the rhizomes, and grows in rich, moist soil. It grows best here under greenhouse conditions, where the rhizome is lifted and allowed to rest over the winter months. The most widely cultivated is Curcuma domestica, or Tumeric, which is used as both a spice and a dye. Curcuma Zedoria is grown in S. China for the starch produced by the rhizomes.
