The Q&A Archives: Indoor Care for Astilbes

Question: I have been offered some beautiful astilbes and as I live in an apartment, I would like to know if I can grow them in flower pots, if they should be placed indoors or outdoors, and how big do they get? Thank you very much. Cristina Parnetti Sleepy Hollow, NY

Answer: Astilbes can be grown as a greenhouse pot plant. They like partial shade to full sun, and will grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet depending on variety. The most important requirement for optimum performance is adequate moisture. Fertile, moist soil will produce abundant bloom and lush foliage during the summer. The absence of moisture will result in plants with brown foliage and premature death of leaves.
