We are planning on moving to Hilo, Hawaii, so I can grow and play in my garden year round. However, I read in a paper a woman from Hawaii wants to move back to New York so she can have her lilacs again....Wouldn't they grow there? And if not what else am I going to miss?

In all honesty, many well-loved garden plants will not thrive and bloom in the tropics. Lilacs need a cold period in order to bloom, as do many bulbs such as daffodils and temperate climate fruit trees, for example. On the other hand, there are so many wonderful tropical plants it's hard to predict if you will miss the others or not. You might wish to take a look at some books about gardening with tropical plants and see what you think! All the best with your plans!
