Burpee does offer seeds for hybrid butterfly bushes in mixed colors. If however, you want a specific color, you might prefer to obtain a named hybrid which would be started from a cutting rather than from seed. You may order a catalog at the website http://burpee.com/ or call 1-800-888-1447 Mon.- Fri. 9 am - 8 pm ET, Sat. & Sun. 9 am - 5 pm ET for a catalog or an order.

In any case, Butterfly Bushes grow best in rich, well-drained (meaning not soggy) soil in a warm, sunny spot. They quickly grow into somewhat scraggly bushes so be sure to allow some room. During severe winters they may suffer severe winter dieback, sometimes all the way to the ground, but regrow quickly from the roots and bloom normally.

While seeds can be started any time the soil is warm, spring is best so that the shrubs have time to gain some size and become established before undergoing the trials of winter weather. Container plants from the nursery are also best planted in spring or early summer for the same reason.

Good luck with your Buddleia!
