We set out eggplant transplants the last weekend of May, and then we had snow the 4th of June and an unusually cold week followed. The plants have bloomed profusely but no fruits have set. Is it just too cold in Wyoming for us to grow eggplants? |
I'm surprised your plants didn't die during the cold snap you had in June. Frost will usually kill them. Eggplants are heat-lovers, and their growth is usually retarded by extended temperatures below 50 degrees F. This is probably why your plants have not set fruit. Next year, you could try waiting until temperatures have warmed up in mid-June before setting your transplants outside. Choose an early-maturing cultivar such as 'Tango' or 'Orient Express', which are ready to pick in about 60 days from transplanting. |
