The Q&A Archives: English Ivy on Oak

Question: How do I get rid of English ivy that is growing on large oak tress? I am concerned that the ivy is going to kill the oaks. Thank you. Jack Ward Ridley Park, PA

Answer: Don't be concerned about the ivy on your oak trees. English ivy is not a parasite. It clings to any support by aerial rootlets which do not penetrate the bark. It's actually considered beautiful to have Ivy decorate oak trees. It only becomes a problem if insects and rot organisms get in the foliage and start tunneling in the bark. This is only a problem if the tree is weak anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it.Enjoy!
