Slugs typically hide during the day and feed at night. They seek out cool, dark locations which include hiding under plant debris left in the garden - leaves, stones, old branches, etc. They don't dig into the soil to hide, but may take advantage of the cracks and crevices under dirt clods or stones. Slugs can be controlled by removing hiding places and by hand picking them while they're feeding.
