What advantages are there of becoming a Master Gardener? Also, the local college has a program but you can only use the title when participating in their events. Is this normal?

Certified Master Gardeners usually must earn their title in a number of ways. They generally receive training and on-going education opportunities in exchange for volunteering their time to assist in the community and must demonstrate a certain level of gardening knowledge before they are allowed to use the title. The programs vary from state to state and even somewhat from county to county within a state depending on the local administrator of the program. Unfortunately I am not familiar with all of the requirements in your area or across the country, however since it is a volunteer rather than commercial program there may well be some restrictions on what is considered appropriate use of the title.
