There are hundreds of species and varieties of begonias, but the best choice for your border is the hardy begonia (Begonia grandis). This plant bears large, open sprays of pink or white blooms from late summer into early fall on 2' arching clumps of striking leaves. It thrives in shade and fertile, moist (but well-drained) soil. Plant in the spring, and be sure to amend the soil with lots of organic matter to help hold moisture.
