The Q&A Archives: Preserving Pine Cold Frames

Question: Have you any suggestions for non-toxic (or low-toxic) wood preservatives to use on pine? (I'm building a coldframe that will be used for food plants.) Brian Tracy Fairview, NC

Answer: Linseed oil can be used to help preserve the wood and not be toxic to the plants. However, it needs annual applications. You also could line the base with plastic to prevent the cold frame from rotting so quickly and move it indoors for winter. I have a pine cold frame I've never treated and it has lasted now for 8 years and it's still usable.
