For the first time I am growing cantalopes. The are a good size now, however the color is still a light green. They have the stripes on them, but the outsides are smooth. Can you please tell me when to pick them? Can they ripen off the vine?

Once they begin to near mature size, watch the stems carefully. Small cracks will appear in the stem where it connects to the fruit. When the stem shrivels enough that you can pick the melon with a little twist, it's ready. (The stem should stay on the vine.) Then, if you have the patience, let the picked melon sit around for a day or two before you cut it open and eat it.

Enjoy your melon!
