| The general consensus is that stump removal products are the cheapest but least reliable way to get rid of stumps, and when the products do work, the process takes a long time. Check with a local company that rents lawn and garden equipment and get an estimate on rental of a stump grinder. The machine is kind of like a tiller with chipper blades. It digs down into the soil, chopping out the wood from 1-2' deep. It doesn't remove all the roots, though. Only a pickaxe and a strong back or a backhoe will get the whole stump out of the ground.
