I want to start an herb garden next year. I'm wondering if you have any advice on how I should get started? Which herbs should I choose? How do I prepare the soil? Any information would be helpful.

The best advice I can offer is that you decide which herbs appeal to you, and will suit the growing site. Your own motivation should guide you in making choices. Generally, herbs are categorized by their uses: culinary, medicinal, natural dyes, fragrance/potpourri, etc. You'll often find the same herb can fall into more than one of these categories!

Here are some websites to browse, so you can decide where to focus: Algy's Herb Page - www.algy.com/herb
American Botanical Council - www2.outer.net/herbalgram/
The Whole Herb - www.wholeherb.com
These sites will also feature books on the topic.

Most herbs do best in full sun, but there are some that prefer to grow in shade or part-shade. Soil needs also differ - some love rich soil, and others won't thrive unless they're planted in infertile soil!

I know this may sound confusing, but hang in there and enjoy the fun of learning more about herbs and experimenting in your garden! We're here if you have questions about growing specific herbs, gardening techniques, etc.
