The Q&A Archives: Advantage to Pregerminating Onion Seed

Question: Is there any advantage to imbibing the seed of onions to prepare them for rapid and uniform germination? The plants will be grown in various growth chamber and lab situations not outdoors? If so, is amount of moisture, time, and temperature during the process critical? Keith Henderson Houston, TX

Answer: The only advantage to pregerminating onion seeds I see is if you have trouble getting them to start indoors or outdoors naturally. If that's the case, then, pregerminate them in your lab and you'll have better success. They won't necessarily grow faster or mature earlier than ones not pregerminated.
