Why is it that my hydranga does not bloom every year? This year there are plenty of flowers. The two previous years, nothing. This is a well established bush. |
Hydrangeas bloom on stems that grow from two-year old wood. If you've pruned your plant back, or if winter weather has killed the stems, it will take the plant two years to develop the wood that supports the stems that flower. To keep your shrub in shape, cut back after blooming to encourage the growth of new wood. Cut some of the stems down to the ground, and cut others only partially back. Next year you should have blooms on the wood that was partly cut back, and new shoots growing from the crown of the plant where you cut the old wood back completely. |
