I have an orange football sized, I believe it to be a squash of some sort, in my garden. I purchased some plants from a gardening store, what I believed to be butternut squash. But it is no butternut squash. I am stumped as to what it may be. It is about 12 inches long, bright orange, and in the shape of a football. What is it?

What fun! There are some "specialty" winter squashes that could match your description, including some of the spaghetti squash and banana squash varieties. You might try asking at the gardening store if they know which varieties they had in addition to butternut -- sometimes tags do accidently get switched in the spring rush.
