Question: I live in Columbia, MD, between DC and Baltimore. I would like to mass plant some bulbs in a shady wooded area. What bulbs would do best, and when would be the best time to plant them?

Answer: Bulbs for shade: Fall-planted, spring-into-summer bloom -- Asiatic lilies, Puschkinia, Chionodoxa, Galanthus, Scilla, Leucojum,Muscari, Camassia, Endymion. Spring-planted, summer bloom -- Caladium, Begonia, Elephant's Ear.
