The Q&A Archives: Topping a Papaya Tree

Question: Would it do any harm to top my Papaya tree (now about 20 ft tall) to about 10 or 12 ft.

Answer: Papaya lacks the woody tissue common to trees so is considered a giant herb rather than a tree. Cutting it back shouldn't harm it, and will probably encourage new growth, which will result in additional fruit. Papaya has the potential to reach about 25' in maturity.
