| This really depends on where you are in PA and on the microclimate in your garden. Some of the newer crepe myrtle varieties are more cold hardy than the older varieties and may possibly attain tree-like proportions if grown in a very sheltered spot with full sun and excellent drainage. (They also exhibit good disease resistance for the most part.) However, in many cases crepe myrtles will winterkill to the ground every winter. This means they must resprout annually and will always be bushy rather than tree-shaped. They will still bloom, though, since they bloom only on new wood anyway. You might discuss this with some knowledgeable nursery staff in your area and see what their opinion is for your particular location. |
