The Q&A Archives: Why Ants

Question: Yesterday I planted some tomato and today I found thousands of ants and bees surrounding it. The tomatoes were fresh and not out-of-date; I planted them the same as usual. What happened? Sandy Yeung Richmond, BC (Canada)

Answer: You may have just stirred up the soil enough to get the ants and bees interested in their new neighbor. I don't think they will harm the tomato. You might just check the undersides of the tomato for any white flies or aphids that the ants might like. Spray insecticidal soap to kill them. Other than that, leave them be, unless the tomato starts suffering.
