The Q&A Archives: Browning Alberta Spruce

Question: Our Alberta Spruces have started to develop a spiral shaped pattern that turns the top half of the trees brown. How should I treat this?

Answer: In order to suggest a treatment, it is important to know exactly what the problem is. Unfortunately, there are a number of possible reasons for this to happen and based on your description I can't give you a definite diagnosis. Since this could be a serious problem, you might wish to contact either your County Extension office (Hunterdon County tel. 788-1338) or a professional arborist for some on-site assistance. Good luck with your trees!
