What are some good perennials, trees or shrubs that can grow in a boggy area in yard in zone 4? |
The following perennials will grow in wet soils/shallow water: Acorus calamus (sweet flag), Iris versicolor (blue flag, wild iris), Pontederia cordata (pickerel weed). If the soil is very moist, but not completely saturated, you might try: Aruncus dioicus (goat's beard), Astilbe, Primula (primrose), Lobelia cardinalis (cardinal flower), Matteuccia struthipteris (ostrich fern), Tiarella cordifolia (foamflower). Trees that tolerate moist to wet soils include: Acer rubrum (red maple), alder, Betula nigra (river birch), Carpinus caroliniana (American hornbeam), Nyssa sylvatica (black gum), Picea mariana (black spruce), and the various Salix (willow) species. Good shrub choices include: Aronia melanocarpa (black chokecherry), Clethra alnifolia (sweet pepperbush), Kalmia spp. (bog laurel, sheep laurel), Vaccinium corymbosum (highbush blueberry), viburnum. Hosta and daylilies can also withstand quite moist soils. Hope this helps! |
