| Peppers are a warm-season crop and the seeds can be planted in a sunny site in late spring. Seeds germinate best in moist, warm soil (70F - 80F degrees). The plants have shallow root systems, so mix organic matter into the top 6 inches of soil and mulch over the root area when the plants emerge, to help keep soil moist. Space plants about 1 1/2 feet apart, in rows 2 feet apart. Pepper plants don't need to be fertilized unless the leaves are a pale green or growth is slow. You can mulch with compost (which will release nutrients into the soil as it decomposes,), or feed your pepper plants a liquid manure tea or fish emulsion. |
