The Q&A Archives: Why Hyacinths May Bloom Early

Question: What causes hyacinths to bloom immediatly as they come out of the ground? Mine never seem to get any higher 2 inches before blooming. William Beall Garden Grove, CA

Answer: My only guess as to why your hyacinths are blooming so early is they aren't getting the proper winter cooling period in your area of California, so their growth is abnormal. Do you have neighbors who grow hyacinths? Are they having the same problem? Try planting them in the coolest area (northside of a building) and mulching in fall so they can get the proper chilling hours to grow normally.
