| Injections of corn syrup or evaporated milk are rumored to rapidly increase the size of pumpkins. You can understand the importance if you plan to compete in one of the 'Largest Pumpkin' contests held nationally. There's no truth to the rumors. Pumpkins grow large when supplied with an abundance of water and given ample nutrients. To grow a huge pumpkin, start with seed like 'Atlantic Giant', amend the soil with lots of organic matter prior to planting, and pinch back the growing tip of the vine once it sets a few fruits. Choose one to nurture and pinch out the others. With just one fruit on one vine, the plant will put all of its energy into ripening one giant pumpkin.
