The Q&A Archives: Identifying Hibiscus

Question: I recently got a Hibiscus, but don't know if I can plant it outside because I do not know what variety it is. It is a tree, not a shrub, currently about 3 ft. tall, with large 4-5 inch apricot colored blooms that only last one day.

Answer: This sounds like a tropical hibiscus (Hibiscus chinensis) grown or trained in the form of a standard, so you would need to bring it in for the winter. The hardy woody hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) does not have apricot colored blooms -- only white, pinks and purples. Enjoy your hibiscus!
