I've got an area I need to cover with some kind of flowering vine. It's a hot, sunny area, so what flowering vine (will be using a trellis) should I buy? I want beautiful showy flowers, and preferably an evergreen, though I'm probably hoping for too much.

Lonicera (Honeysuckle) comes to mind first, climbing roses are second, and Clematis armandii comes in third. Each of these plants is evergreen, and they each have lovely flowers. There are wonderful pictures of each in Sunset Western Garden Book. If you don't have a copy, your local library probably has one. Enjoy!
