The Q&A Archives: Tasty Tomatoes

Question: Tomatoes don't seem to be as tasty as they did years ago. They are all uniform size, color, etc but lacking. Can you suggest something that has "That real tomato taste"?. I don't care about the shape being uniform etc...just the taste.

Answer: Many gardeners share your opinion! Tomatoes are bred for higher yields, disease resistance, and differing season lengths. Along with all of these improvements, they seem to have lost some of their flavor. Why not try growing some of the heirloom varieties like Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter, Rutgers or Quarter Century? Each of these are available from Burpee's Heirloom Catalog. Order online at:, or phone toll-free at (800) 888-1447.
