My husband and I enjoy pearl onions and would like to grow them. Are they a variety unto themselves, or are they simply very young onions that are harvested early? Have tried several local sources and nobody seems to know.

Pearl onions are known as Silverskin, or cocktail onions. They're a special type, similar to scallions or bunching onions, and the most commonly grown varieties are White Bermuda, Crystal Wax, Barletta, or White Mexican. Pearl onions are grown from sets or from seed and are available from Territorial Seed Company, P. O. Box 157, Cottage Grove, OR 97424-0061. Phone (541) 942-9547.
