The Q&A Archives: Striped Sunflower Seeds

Question: What Sunflower produces the Striped Seed as opposed to the Black Oil seed?

Answer: The oil seed types of sunflowers are usually grown as commercial crops and would be purchased through a farm supply situation. In general, the sunflower seeds offered for retail sale are the striped varieties which are grown for birdseed and for human consumption, as well for cut flowers. A very nice variety with extra-large striped seeds is the SuperSnack Hybrid. It (and many others) is available through Burpee.
