Sunflowers are a favorite, and can be harvested for winter use. In my garden, the birds flock to eat purple coneflower and Black-Eyed Susan seeds as soon as they are ripe, along with any thistles I may have missed on my weeding forays. They also enjoy berries from many shrubs and vines, including the viburnums, shrub dogwoods, chokeberries and Virginia Creeper. As the season progresses, they will eat nearly any seed or berry available in the garden and appreciate the shelter provided by evergreens.
