| I recently received a Mandevilla plant from a greenhouse. It was sent for a funeral. Is this a houseplant or a perennial outdoor plant? If planted outdoors will it go dormant and then come back next spring? It is a vine with large flowers. |
| Mandevilla is a beautiful vining tropical with large pink flowers. It is not hardy in your area, and in fact will be killed by winter weather as far south as Corpus Christi. I would suggest you keep it indoors for winter. Locate it in as bright a spot as you can, and be careful not to overwater. Next spring set it outdoors. You can transplant it into a larger container or set it out in the soil to spend the growing season in a spot with sun to part shade. If it is in a nursery pot with holes in the bottom, you can sink the entire pot into the soil, allowing the roots to venture out into the soil. This will make it much simpler to dig next fall. The following fall bring it in again when temperatures drop into the 50's. Thanks for the question and enjoy that beautiful vine! |
