Answer: It sounds as though the leaves have developed a disease called powdery mildew. Since it's late in the season and the leaves will begin to fall on their own soon, nothing needs to be done. After leaf fall, rake and remove the affected leaves from beneath the tree. Powdery mildew attacks a lot of plants late in the season, usually with no longterm damage to the plants. To help avoid future problems, be sure to give your new trees plenty of sunshine and lots of elbow room so there's good air circulation all around them.
