Can I cut back the spent flower stem of Liatris spicata before the natural die-back, without harming next years bloom, or should I wait as we do with spring flowering bulbs?

Liatris has a striking flower stalk with plumes of fluffy flowers. You can safely cut back the stalk after the flowers are spent, but leave the foliage until it withers and dies back naturally.
